Poor Brooklyn Decker.  It’s one thing to star in two bad movies in the same year, but she gets the misfortune of being in two bad movies that are released in the same week.  First WHAT TO EXPECT WHEN YOU ARE EXPECTING and now BATTLESHIP.   A movie that is not only terrible, but void of almost any intelligence.  So many explosions and absolutely no excitement.  As bad as the TRANSFORMERS sequels were, at least they had some entertainment value.

The first 10 minutes of BATTLESHIP seemed promising, when we first meet Alex Hopper (Taylor Kitsch), he drunkenly breaks into a convenience store to steal a chicken burrito to impress  Sam (Brooklyn Decker), who happens to be the daughter of Admiral Shane (Liam Neeson).  The whole scene that takes place in the store, through the view of a security camera is one of the funniest sequences on film that I have seen this year.  Unfortunately, everything that happens after that is an utter mess.

There is not much I can say about BATTLESHIP that you haven’t seen in the trailers.  There is a reason why the trailers make the film look like nothing but warships fighting spaceships.  That’s basically all that happens here.  There are characters but they are all cookie cutter.  Oh and I hope Rihanna does not try to give up her music for acting.   As for the cast, Kitsch is as good as he can be with the material he is given, same goes for  Alexander Skarsgard.  The only character in BATTLESHIP who seems to have any type of personality is Seaman Jimmy ‘Ordy” Ord (played by the very funny Jesse Plemons).

The real shame here isn’t that the movie is beyond stupid, it’s that with all the action, it still comes off  boring.    I just could not wait for the thing to end.  The aliens have absolutely no sense of purpose.  It is never made clear what they want from our planet.   By BATTLESHIP’s midway point, I simply stopped caring.  Director Peter Berg seems to be trying to make a Michael Bay type of film, and after watching this, I think I understand better why Bay loves filming action with his “shaky cam style”.   This is one battleship that needs to sink fast.

WHAT TO EXPECT WHEN YOU ARE EXPECTING is based on the New York Times bestselling book of the same name, which has sold over 35 million copies.   I have never read the source material but it must be better than the movie, because that was pretty terrible.   I have no idea what it’s like to be pregnant, but very little of what is in the film feels true.

One of the first issues with WHAT TO EXPECT, is that there are just way too many characters.  Yes, it’s an all star cast, but most of the characters are so one-dimensional, that it’s next to impossible to care about what any of them are going through.   I did not buy any of the relationships here, with the exception of the two young food truck vendors Rosie (Anna Kendrck) and Marco (Chace Crawford), who are the only pair to show any real depth in their characters.

WHAT TO EXPECT features a capable cast that includes Cameron Diaz, Jennifer Lopez, Elizabeth Banks, Ben Falcone, Dennis Quaid as well as many others but the writing here is so lazy and uninspired that they are giving nothing interesting to work with.  The only moments I found myself remotely entertained was during the scenes in the park with the “dudes group”.  A group of fathers who take their offspring to the park every Saturday to talk about whatever they want and it never leaves the group.  With the dudes being played by Chris Rock, Rob Hubel, Amir Talai, and Thomas Lennon, you know there are going to be some laughs.  I wish I could have just seen a movie about those four guys and that’s it.

It’s easy to say that WHAT TO EXPECT was not made for a male audience but this movie is just plain bad no matter what your sex it.

Sacha Baron Cohen is back and just as offensive as ever.  This time moving away from the documentary style of BORAT and BRUNO and going for a more structured story.  Is THE DICTATOR funny?  Yes it is.  It may not have nearly as many laughs as BORAT but it is a million times better than BRUNO.   The  biggest issue with THE DICTATOR  is the screenplay, which plays out like a romantic-comedy and that is the last thing it needed to be.

Cohen plays Aladeen, the Dictator of his Eastern country who winds up being switched with a double by Tamir (Ben Kingsley) at the United Nations.  Tamir wants Aladeen out of the picture so he can profit off the his country’s oil.    Once the switch takes place, Aladeen finds himself penniless and homeless on the streets of New York, that is until he meets Zoey (Anna Faris), a environment friendly shop owner who makes it her mission to stand up for those who cannot do it for themselves.   Not knowing his true identity, Zoey takes in Aladeen and gives him employment at her shop, though he has his own motives for taking the job.   Soon, Aladeen finds himself falling for Zoey and this is where THE DICTATOR goes off track.

THE DICTATOR works best when it goes all out to be offensive.  Most of it towards Jews.  Being Jewish myself, I can laugh at much of the humor, especially knowing Cohen is Jewish himself.    The story may not work all that well, but if you want to see a movie that’s going to deliver some laughs.  Go check out THE DICTATOR.
